Gartner mentions Catalant in Hype Cycle for the Digital Workplace, 2020

Complimentary Download In our view, a mention in Gartner research is a validation of a technology company’s vision and ability to deliver for its customers. We were delighted to be mentioned in eight different research reports in 2019 and 2020, including four different Hype Cycle reports and a Cool Vendors report.*

We’re grateful for Gartner’s acknowledgment. More importantly, though, we have strong conviction that our representation across different topics and categories is evidence that Catalant is part of an emerging category of software that bridges the gap between strategy and execution.

Some of the Gartner reports written before the COVID-19 pandemic began have been recently updated with new business realities in mind.  Gartner’s Hype Cycle for the Digital Workplace, 2020, which mentioned Catalant as a sample vendor for the second year running, notes that:

The year 2020 is a great time to look at the past decade and plan for the decade ahead. COVID-19 has revealed the brittle nature of many paper and analog processes, and the existential need to accelerate digital transformation. When viewed from a historical perspective, the pandemic is likely to be seen as an inflection point in human development, when we officially ended the post-Industrial Age and commenced the true digital era. For many organizations, COVID-19 elevates digital workplace strategies from nice-to-have, to must-have status, and it makes workforce digital dexterity a C-suite issue. A recent Gartner digital workplace leader survey showed that 68% of respondents agreed that “since COVID-19 more C-level execs have expressed involvement in digital workplace.”1

To help business leaders navigate their digital transformation journeys, we have made Gartner’s Hype Cycle for the Digital Workplace, 2020, available for complimentary download.

The pandemic has exacerbated the strain that inefficient operations and poor strategy execution efforts put on organizations, which has accelerated the adoption of new technologies and ways of working.  While it’s impossible to know the full impact COVID-19 will have on the global economy, learnings from this period will have a lasting impact on the workforce and corporations of the future.

In our view, flexibility, speed, and organizational readiness will be critical for success as businesses become increasingly accustomed to a state of constant transformation. As enterprises continue to adjust to “the new normal,” we believe business leaders at large organizations are likely to be thinking about how to enable a digital workplace and how to engage a flexible workforce to build more adaptive and resilient organizations.

Before the COVID-19 pandemic, some forward-thinking strategy, transformation, and enterprise portfolio leaders already used Catalant’s SaaS platform to get better visibility into how they deployed their workforces to execute their strategic objectives; many business leaders also accessed external resources flexibly through Catalant’s Expert Marketplace. However, we know that many organizations are just starting similar digital transformation efforts.

Breaking it Down

Enabling a Digital Workplace

In Gartner’s recently published Hype Cycle for the Digital Workplace, 2020, Catalant is listed for the second year running as a sample vendor with internal talent marketplace capabilities. This report, which classifies internal talent marketplaces as “Benefit Rating: Transformational,” notes that “The COVID-19 pandemic has given rise to projects and challenges that were often unanticipated. Consequently, many organizations need to gather knowledge of their internal skills in new ways. This has led to increased interest in internal talent marketplaces, which can help managers with the redeployment of staff from low-demand to high-demand activities.”

Many of our customers have told us that some divisions or business units are soaring in post-pandemic market conditions, while others are facing significant headwinds. This imbalance creates stress for many large organizations, as high-performing parts of the business must produce beyond capacity while anemic parts of the business may have extra capacity due to slowed demand.

Before the pandemic, most companies allocated roughly the same resources to the same business units and product lines year after year, despite evidence that this operational rigidity hindered their ability to realize strategic goals. However, the pandemic has intensified pressure on organizations to embrace new operating models that allow for greater organizational agility.

In Gartner’s analysis of Internal Talent Marketplaces, Helen Poitevin writes:

Large enterprises needing to pivot quickly and push innovation to the edges may be encumbered by heavy management and control structures. However, internal talent marketplaces have the potential to change that. They establish trust through feedback mechanisms. They allow for worker-led innovation and help workers take full control of their careers. They enable much better and more granular tracking of the skills, competencies, knowledge and interest of individual workers. This, in turn, will give enterprises a much better view of their workforce and improve workforce planning. Internal talent marketplaces will help bring about leaner, more agile and more adaptable organizations.”

Engaging a Flexible Workforce

In many cases, the pandemic has accelerated the need for digital transformation at the same time it has forced businesses to take on cost-saving measures and make sharp cuts to their workforces. This means that businesses are running leaner than ever while simultaneously having to do things they have never done before. As a result, they need access to capabilities — in many cases temporarily — that may not exist within the organization.

We believe this is why Gartner highlights “contingent worker expansion” as one of the nine key ways that executive leaders need to prepare for the future of work in their recent research on “Post-COVID-19 Future of Work Trends and Talent Implications.”

As our customers make strategic pivots and pursue new products, channels, markets, and ways of working, they can flexibly access right-sized expertise through Catalant’s Expert Marketplace to help them execute. This flexibility allows business leaders to variabilize costs on capabilities that are critical temporarily but not core to the organization’s long-term operations, enabling companies hit hard by the pandemic to keep costs down while making investments to stabilize the business.

Getting from strategy to execution requires a digital workplace and a flexible workforce.
